Most of the content of Dragon Age Central has been developer posts to the official Dragon Age forums, first opened in May 2004. But all things must come to an end, and these forums were shut down on 2nd November 2009, the day before the game’s release in North America.
Since I haven’t had time to add much other content to the site for most of 2009, I’ve decided to also shut down Dragon Age Central as it was, leaving it here as an archive.
The new Dragon Age Central is now a much simpler (and fully automated) website dedicated to making developer posts to the new official forum (on Bioware’s social site) easier to find and search through.
It’s been interesting running this site, and in a way I’ll miss it... but hopefully I’ll be too busy finally playing the actual game to care :)

Thread: Console Balancing [+0]
Date: Tuesday, 15 September 2009 08:31PM
Yes. It means we have dumbed it down. Console gamers are all fools and knuckleheads and require only the most simple of twitch based, tea-baggingly simple combat to enjoy as they are mouth-breathing dolts amused by headshots and shiny objects, like house keys.
Why does the first thing always seem to be "it means dumbed down!"? I know that wasn't the intents and there were other possibilities mentioned, but it always leads with "dumbed down" for consoles. There just seems to be some innate prejudice that console players only play "dumb" games. The console version was rebalanced as, for memory reasons, there are generally fewer NPCs on screen at once for the console versions. So if we wanted the overall difficultly of an area to be "10" we could have one "3", two "2" and 3 "1" enemies on the PC. For the console we would make this two "3" and two "2" oe create a wave system or whatever. The balancing was done to keep all the fun and challenge in the game no matter what version/platform you play. |

Thread: Dragon Age: Origins Character Update: Wynne now with video [+7]
Date: Monday, 10 August 2009 10:53PM
We have finally added the long awaited Wynne video. You can check Wynne out on her Character page here: http://dragonage.bioware.com/character_wynne.html
I have to say, I think Wynne is the most underused and under appreciated follower in the game. Sure, Alistair is witty, Morrigan is dark and sexy, Sten is huge and tough, but Wynne has... aspects I can't talk about as well as her powerful magic. I know people are going to want to use Dog or Zevran or whatever, but people will miss out not using Wynne. |

Thread: So, how smart is Dog? [+2]
Date: Thursday, 06 August 2009 07:43PM
Dog is a fully fleshed out party NPC. The writers and Dev team have made him every bit as fun and compelling as any of the other party NPCs.
He is still a dog though. Do not expect some sort of "magical dog" where he smokes a pipe while wearing a bathrobe discussing poetry or climbing the side of buildings to pick the lock on a safe . He is a dog. He growls. He whines. He barks. He wags his tail. He pees on trees. He savagely rips the throats out of enemies. You know, dog things. He is smarter than Alistair though. In my opinion anyways. |

Thread: About Zevran... [+16]
Date: Thursday, 18 June 2009 03:21PM
Ok, I'm going to step in here and fill you all in, so you can all do my job better (since you are all questioning it anyways).
We have roughly 4 months before the game is launched. Between now and launch we want to keep you all interested in the game. We want more of these weekly updates (like last week was Morrigan, this week is the High Dragon, etc). We like to give you information, screenshots, videos, etc. While all of these updates are informative and cool, some are "sexier" than others. By this I mean that an update on Alistair or Morrigan got more reaction from most of you than the one we did on Ostagar. Ostagar is still important to the game, but we know people generally want to know more about party members and romance than they do about geography, etc. If we were to give you EVERYTHING you ask for now, many people would go "Cool! Thanks for the update. Now what?" and then disappear. We want you coming back here. We want you to ask questions, watch videos, read updates, etc. So, we are not "shying away" from Zevran, Leliana or others (I do notice much more bitc... err, complaining about no Zevran and not any "Where's my Ogrhen or Wynne update?", but I digress). We are pacing out the information between now and launch. I'll also say, as the guy who helps coordinate the release of information, if I see a highly demanded topic, I know the best way to keep you coming back is to hold it for later. So, suck it up buttercup. You'll learn more about Zevran, Leliana, and all the other stuff you are so patiently waiting for in the months to come. Stay Tuned. |

While I find her an amazing actress (and still hot for a woman of slightly advanced years) I'm not sure I get the "geek credit" with Helen Mirren? What am I forgetting?

Thread: Tedious, time-consuming defensive casting? [+8]
Date: Wednesday, 06 May 2009 03:58AM
Different spells have differing casting times. Some are essentially instant, others (usually the more powerful ones, but not always) take soem time in casting.
We'll be delving more into magic in the coming months and more will be made clear. Stay tuned. |

That depends on all sorts of things, such as you class, background, how you leveled up your character, etc.

Thread: Your take on Armor [+7]
Date: Sunday, 12 April 2009 02:06PM
To allow you to create the character you want to play. I notice you do not complain that you cannot "dye" your face to change the appearance throuhout the game the way you want to be able to with armor. Or are you arguing that you should be able to? As in "I am bored with being a tanned caucasian male with blonde hair and a tattoo. Now I want to be a pale Asian guy with a moustache."? Due to the material it is made out of.
Because different shields are just that, different. Or do you want what is essentially a small buckler to be the same visual appearance of a large tower? I can't believe you are actually trying to use this arguement. I suppose if you are the sort of "person" (I had originally typed in something more negative, but didn't mean it directed at Alodar, but at that silly group of players who sacrifice usefulness for style) that walks around with a weapon or shield or whatever becuase it looks cool instead of because it is useful, then that would be up to you.
You are trying to argue 2 completely different things that are only slightly related. Something that is different (it has different stats, different positives or negatives, different damage, etc) is different and we have made a visual delineation to show this. Having the EXACT same thing but just having it be blue instead of red is NOT in the game. And more to the point, that is NOT what is being discussed. I mentioned that being able to change the color of your armor is in my opinion dumb in the context of our game. I also recognized that there is a group of people who will want to do this and that we have a toolset that will allow it. Are you now arguing that anything with a different visual appearance is the same as allowing you to change the color of something at your whim? That all armors are the same except their appearance? That is not a very good arguement. |
