Most of the content of Dragon Age Central has been developer posts to the official Dragon Age forums, first opened in May 2004. But all things must come to an end, and these forums were shut down on 2nd November 2009, the day before the game’s release in North America.

Since I haven’t had time to add much other content to the site for most of 2009, I’ve decided to also shut down Dragon Age Central as it was, leaving it here as an archive.

The new Dragon Age Central is now a much simpler (and fully automated) website dedicated to making developer posts to the new official forum (on Bioware’s social site) easier to find and search through.

It’s been interesting running this site, and in a way I’ll miss it... but hopefully I’ll be too busy finally playing the actual game to care :)

Mages can wear armor if they meet the strength requirements. But putting points into that may handicap you with your mage abilities.

They can also carry swords and other weapons.

Correct. smile smile

You can dual wield any two weapons as long as:

- They are usable with one hand. So maces, axes, daggers, swords, yes. Mauls, two-handed swords, battle axes, no.

- You meet the necessary strength requirements to wield the weapon one handed.

- You meet the necessary skills to wield 2 of certain objects. Anyone can wield a mace + dagger. Wielding 2 maces is a skill.

- Keep in mind there is a difference between using 2 weapons and wielding them well. There are skills that you may want to take to fight better with 2 weapons at once.

Like Chris says, the Origin stories seem more to be a background/biography than an actual part of character creation.

The way I understand it, you create your own character, and then you can pick from the listed Origins to define your character's societal status and starting point.

There are limits to what origin you could choose depending on the character you create (mages require the mage origin, and dwarf, elf, and human warriors and rogues can access only their two racial origins).

The posters and concept are are mostly chicks because guys really only want to draw boobs.

Kind of right, but also completely backwards.

You start off with a generic human male PC. You can now choose to be female if you prefer.

You then choose the race. If you choose dwarf or elf, the model changes accordingly. You can choose to remain human as well.

You then choose the class of the character you want to be (if you have chosen to be a dwarf, you cannot be a mage).

You then choose your background based on the preceding choices. So mages choose the mage origins. Dwarves choose noble or commoner. Elves choose Dalish or city. Humans who are not mages are nobles.

After you have made all those choices, you then customize your character so she/he looks like you want them to.

We'll have more details on customizing in the future, but that should give you a pretty good outline. smile smile

Do not confuse "customize" with "origins".

There are 6 origins stories. They can all be played as either a male or female PC. They do not "customize" except that you choose your gender and class (and possibly race).

You DO customize your characters face with the most customizable character creator we have ever made.

Or a Qunari Origin? shades smile

There is far a better chance of seeing a Guitar-playing Zombie Kitten Origin than a Qunari Origin.

One thing that I share with ldyshayna is the desire to play a good, decent human being who does right by her fellow men and makes a difference in their lives. When the game posits that this is a dark and gritty world where there are only grey choices, and where you will have to sacrifice folk for the greater good, we wonder what role our hero will play in it.
Then let me state unequivocably: you can play a good, decent person who does their best to be a hero. I have said this before. Being a hero may not be the easiest choice, but it is possible. Saying that you must make sacrifices to achieve your goals does not mean that you are forced to stab your friends repeatedly with your sword while you cackle evilly -- but it does mean that not everything you do is going to come effortlessly and without a little pain in some form. If that's what you are seeking, then perhaps getting a heads-up that this is a game that involves occasionally making some harsh, bloody choices is not a bad idea.

The impact will vary -- often it's just slightly different dialogue, at other times you're looking at completely divergent experiences compared to other origins. But, yes, the differences are present throughout the entire game.

I'm partial to female characters in general, so, that stays the same when talking Dragon Age. I have, however, played through the Origins several times with both genders and there are differences ... so in that case, play the game TWELVE times! smile smile

I was planning to start as either a human mage or noble, but there doesn't seem to be much love for the Human noble. Why?

We've all playtested the human noble the most. After the eleven billionth time you've run through it, you start to think, "Hey, all that squalor in the alienage is starting to look pretty sweet about now..."
True. it's a great origin and is lots of fun, but a favourite? Not after a bajillion times playing through it. wink smile
