You’ll often hear reference to zombie kittens when reading about DA; they might even appear in the game. But who are they? What dark mind spawned them? Are they destined to take over the world, dooming us to a life of tickling them and taking out their litter?

The game development process is long and difficult one. Most features implemented take time, time that must be taken away from other potential features. But often times fans on the official forum don’t appreciate this. They’ll casually claim that their idea would be easy to implement. David Gaider, lead writer on the project, has a saying: "every time a forum member says this, somewhere a small kitten gets punted through a plate glass window.".

So what happens to all these poor kittens? Forum regular Maria Caliban revealed the sinister truth in her 3rd post to this thread:
Quote:
Seriously, you know all those kittens people kick through windows? I’ve been secretly raising an undead army of kittens that snuck into the BioWare headquarters one stormy night and raided them. I have a pile of paper here with tons of information - much of which has been shredded by playful zombie kittens.

Later in the same thread another forum regular, Cat Lance, posted the first photographic evidence of the kittens as a gift for developers Sheryl Chee and Mary Kirby. And so it began.

As you can see on the stats page, Mary Kirby has since been growing an army of zombie kittens. Only she knows what fate awaits us.

Hey, it’s a forum thing.

I haven’t been able to say it before, but now I can: welcome to this Dragon Age website!

As you can see, there have been some major updates to the site, including a new section for site news where I can post information like this. I can also ‘sticky’ any post to draw your attention to it at the top of the page.

Site news and editorials can be commented on. Please feel free to experiment and play around with the commenting system on this post: just click the ‘comments’ link to the bottom right and the rest should be obvious. If you don’t know what to say, answer me this: do you think all posts should be commentable (even Forum Posts)?

A useful new feature is that the posts list now has clear markers to distinguish posts from different days, months or years. Do you have any thoughts on how else the site could be improved? Have your say in the comments! :)

Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to suggest everyone rate posts. It’s fun! Just click on the number of stars you think a particular post deserves. Make your opinion heard! :)

Dragon Age (DA) is Bioware’s next PC RPG. First revealed by Bioware CEOs Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka just prior to E3 2004, full development didn’t start until perhaps 2005.

Like the 2002 release of Neverwinter Nights (NWN) before it, DA’s development cycle could take as much as five years, especially given the work needed on DA’s new game engine ‘Eclipse’ (which features PhysX technology but is otherwise Bioware’s own). That said, some time will have been saved since Bioware was able to prototype ideas with NWN’s toolset.

Scott Greig, project director, opened the official forum just after E3 2004 actively seeking feedback, which the fans were only too happy to provide.

DA was a no-show at E3 2005, 2006 and 2007, though received significant press coverage when featured on the cover of the December 2006 launch issue of ‘Games for Windows: The Official Magazine’. In that article, Scott suggests a release as early as 2008 might be possible, thanks to the quality of their tool-chain.

Here in 2007 it seems that most major design choices have been made and set in stone, though the developers continue to express interest in ideas from fans.

While many aspects of the game remain closely guarded secrets, David Gaider, lead writer, along with other members of the team, provide fans with a constant source of tid-bits and even the occasional revelation. Here’s looking forward to more of the same in the coming years and hopefully a release before 2010.

A character walks along a cobbled path surrounded by buildings. One of them, likely a pub, has a wooden sign outside depicting a red, fiery dragon-like creature with a unicorn-like horn. It seems to be eating a man. The character has a sword and shield strapped to his back.

The screenshot also shows an early attempt at the game UI. In the bottom-right of the screen are some buttons/ symbols for spells or skills. The character’s portrait is also there, highlighted, with another portrait, possibly a party-member, above it. In the bottom left of the screen is another portrait, possibly a selected NPC. In the top right is a mini-map and in the top left is a column of game buttons.

A magnificant dragan perches atop a rocky escarpment, threatening a man at its feet. The man wears robes and a cape and points a sword at the dragon fearlessly. The dragon stands at the height of 5 or 6 men. Its body is mostly blue/black with a lighter underside. Its wings are outstretched, the thin membranes appearing pink in the light thanks to the numerous tiny veins throughout them.
