Most of the content of Dragon Age Central has been developer posts to the official Dragon Age forums, first opened in May 2004. But all things must come to an end, and these forums were shut down on 2nd November 2009, the day before the game’s release in North America.
Since I haven’t had time to add much other content to the site for most of 2009, I’ve decided to also shut down Dragon Age Central as it was, leaving it here as an archive.
The new Dragon Age Central is now a much simpler (and fully automated) website dedicated to making developer posts to the new official forum (on Bioware’s social site) easier to find and search through.
It’s been interesting running this site, and in a way I’ll miss it... but hopefully I’ll be too busy finally playing the actual game to care :)

Forum posts were made by game developers. Please do not take posts out of context. While these individuals will have special insight into certain game-related questions, they are by no means the final authority. Please read the full topic and all its replies before forming an opinion. Remember, all things are subject to change.

Thread: Dragon Age: BioWare has big plans for episodic content [+6]
Date: Thursday, 18 January 2007 07:20PM We didn't do it for NWN, did we? My advice is that if you feel that downloadable content is overpriced or too short or otherwise not worth it, don't buy it. |

Thread: Please crank up the difficulty [+15]
Date: Monday, 15 January 2007 03:59AM BioWare's "it's done when it's done" policy means, however, that there is an end date, otherwise the product will never get released. Keep in mind that BioWare works in conjunction with our publishers and other companies to arrive at a release date. Like a Doctoral thesis, sure, it's done when it's done and you want to make it as good as possible, but it does have to get finished, and some delays are more costly than others. No. Quite the opposite, really. By that time, we're working to get as many things done as possible. There is no "in peace" when the game is nearing completion. Like I said in the previous paragraph, the object is to get the game done and there is often no time to keep tweaking things to make it "perfect," a concept that only exists in our imaginations. All it ensures is that our development schedules aren't suddenly cut short and gives us a little wiggle room in case there are delays or other problems that happen to any one of the many different departments over 2+ years of work. There is a limit. Don't be fooled into thinking that BioWare's "it's done when it's done" means that we have unlimited time to perfect systems. In game development especially, time = money. Game development involves the construction and integration of many disparate elements from many different departments into a coherent, stable whole over several years of work. Much like large-scale building projects, game development can be slowed, swerved, and even stopped by the smallest and silliest of things, and none of it can be predicted. We can schedule for only so much, after all. It's perfectly consistent, most people simply take some of the wrong comments literally. In this case, it's the "it's done when it's done" policy we work with. |

There's a difference between discussing the realities of different countries' video game laws and rating systems and declarations like, "Americans are squeamish and just can't take realistic depictions of zombie kittens like they can in my country of choice." Or, "Americans hate kittens and only glorify crates." |

Information remains sparse, and there’s not even a release date attached to the game, but whenever Dragon Age comes out, I’ll be ready and eager to play it. From what little we know so far, it sounds like a no-compromises RPG that has blockbuster potential. |

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the show was the fact BioWare showed this project, even on a very limited basis, since release is likely at least two years away. The demo was based on proof of concept work [...] the game will be party-based, using a new engine capable of rendering battles with hundreds of participants. The rules system and IP will both be proprietary, the latter incorporating both familiar and original fantasy races. [...] |
