Most of the content of Dragon Age Central has been developer posts to the official Dragon Age forums, first opened in May 2004. But all things must come to an end, and these forums were shut down on 2nd November 2009, the day before the game’s release in North America.

Since I haven’t had time to add much other content to the site for most of 2009, I’ve decided to also shut down Dragon Age Central as it was, leaving it here as an archive.

The new Dragon Age Central is now a much simpler (and fully automated) website dedicated to making developer posts to the new official forum (on Bioware’s social site) easier to find and search through.

It’s been interesting running this site, and in a way I’ll miss it... but hopefully I’ll be too busy finally playing the actual game to care :)

From BitTech:

We've gotten so used to the static nature of the environments in RPGs that when fighting enemies at a river crossing our first thought isn't usually to back them into the stream and hit them with a lightning blast to electrify the water.

This is genius! Lovin' it. smile smile

Well, except that there was no stream of water in that demo...

Well, I really like RPGs because of choices, I like being in charge and making the decisions. I just don't like haveing to choose between keeping the sword with good stats or the way cooler one with slightly worse stats because my inventory is too full.

I agree with runCDfirst, weight limit worked pretty well in Oblivion because you could dump all your stuff in a chest in a cave or dungeon or w/e and know that when you came back to it all your stuff would be there.

Not to mention that you'd offload most of it onto your henchman...

Actually, if you model out the market, awareness is just a first step. The percentage of "I am aware this game exists" titles the average action/adventure gamer buys is miniscule. Awareness is considered a hygiene factor or "cost of entry". From a statistical modeling point of view, it has minimum weight.
Wouldn't the question then be whether this trailer is meant to increase awareness or actually sell the game? I don't have an answer -- I'm not in marketing, as I said -- but I will say that awareness for DA was pretty low (and perhaps still is, I don't know). But that's just my perception.

It can be kind of a skewed view when you're within a hardcore community like these forums, where the people are already paying attention to everything that comes down the pipe (and groan every time a message is repeated, for instance), but the fact is that from the outside things look very, very different (as you no doubt know).

I believe Tor has plans to translate the book into other languages, though what the timeline might be on such things I honestly have no idea. As suggested, asking the publisher directly is probably the best way to go.

Forgive me for doubting you, but, uh

http://i39.tinypic.com/vhu8vc.png

Well, I suppose I'm doubting you. This is not how you show female gamers that you take them seriously.
Okay, sure, but

a) We didn't create that picture, nor write the caption.

b) All I said was that the marketing will hit different notes, and appeal to different people. Was this one aimed at female gamers? Gee, probably not -- not specifically, anyway. Does it have to be either/or? Even so, my point to I_B was that was bound to be other stuff more relevant to female gamers down the line.

Beyond that, doubt away. Time is on my side.

If you want an example of good marketing, look no further than Blizzard Entertainment. No matter what you think of their games, they have some excellent marketing.
No argument here.

OK. About the leather pants of yours then, did you go for classic black or something more flashy?
Classic black, but it has this ribbing down the sides which is just sweeeet. biggrin smile

Damn, but I love that video!

Some fast-paced, dark, rocking music to accompany a trailer about violence? Yeah, baby, gimme more of that!

*dies laughing*

*coughs* excuse me, no offense meant...but did you just said fast-paced, dark, rocking music?

because I believe the music you're referring to sounds more like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6Nt-u6B8Ss

...than that MM crap.
Sorry, no. I prefer "that MM crap" to Dimmu Borgir, which I consider too fast-paced, too dark, and rocking in a completely different way than I'm comfortable with. Not a big fan of singers who growl while eating the microphone. Excpet maybe for The Agonist's singer; she's HAWT. Still can't stand the music, though.

In summary: Marilyn Manson good, Dimmu Borgir bad, Agonist lead singer hot. wink smile

With all due respect, but.. Could it be possible that GoW trailer worked out well with the chosen music, this one, not so much?
Absolutely, it's possible.

Ah, fair enough. I don't tread in many developer forums, so am not familiar with their crowd. And, I don't think you're in a minority. Pretty much all the RPGers I know dabble in other genres (as do I).

Yup. Puzzle games, sims, strategy games...just not shooters. I took the use of the phrase "handicap" much as the word is used in sports, and that seems to me that difficulty settings are for that purpose. I guess I should say I don't feel I'm handicapped in shooters in the "missing a limb" sense of the word. Heh.

Oh yes shooters :p

Aahh, but did you ever build a pillow fort, or its physics defying cousin, the pillow bridge? There's this one quest for the fighter's guild in Balmora that has you go into a lady's attic and there are just tons and tons of pillows in crates

I didn't build anything out of pillows, no. I did that quest, though. Also, there's a wrecked ship on the coast that has a hold full of pillows, and a shipping manifest with her name on it. I actually ferried all the pillows from the ship to her, just to see if I could talk to her about it. (I couldn't.)

But... games have already conditioned me to pick up every single thing I come across that can be picked up, like some kind of kleptomaniac hoarding bird.

Several hours passed in Morrowind and Oblivion before I was willing to accept that random forks and tea cups weren't going to come in handy later.

True story: I made a point in Morrowind of stealing every paper lantern in the game. This was particularly tricky as a lot of them were hanging from the outsides of Telvanni towers. You know how many times I got attacked by guards while levitating 50 feet off the ground? When I had them all, I arranged them across the grasslands to spell out my character's name.

Er--I mean, I have no idea what you're talking about. Picking up useless items is silly. Yes. Silly.

'Introductory' for me is a code-word for over-simplified and I have no interest in that in PnP RPGs
I've read at least an early version of the rules system they're putting together. I'm not sure what their version of "introductory" is, myself, but I would not say their system is over-simplified -- and I say that from the perspective of a tabletop rules veteran (at least, that's what I would consider myself to be).

My lady friend was just reading an old Penny Arcade book. She came running over excitedly and showed me this:
