Most of the content of Dragon Age Central has been developer posts to the official Dragon Age forums, first opened in May 2004. But all things must come to an end, and these forums were shut down on 2nd November 2009, the day before the game’s release in North America.

Since I haven’t had time to add much other content to the site for most of 2009, I’ve decided to also shut down Dragon Age Central as it was, leaving it here as an archive.

The new Dragon Age Central is now a much simpler (and fully automated) website dedicated to making developer posts to the new official forum (on Bioware’s social site) easier to find and search through.

It’s been interesting running this site, and in a way I’ll miss it... but hopefully I’ll be too busy finally playing the actual game to care :)

Title: Free Game Competition Results

The results are in for our competition to win a copy of Dragon Age: Origins; Digital Deluxe edition!

First I’d like to thank everyone who entered. There was a lot of creativity shown from clear fans of the game. Before we get to our winners, honourable mentions go to:
  • aesoppd’s well-crafted sacred-ashes-based comic , perfectly re-interpreting character expressions for humerous effect.
  • Xiphias’s funny poem that takes to task the attitudes of players.
  • Maria_Caliban’s take on alienage life in her dark short story .

But 3 entries in particular really stood out for me, making them our well-deserved winners:
  • MoL0toW’s dark but inspiring flash story book , capturing a great sense of what it means to be Dalish in Thedas, aided by beautiful artwork.
  • Proviant’s mind-boggling 1000 character faces creation; conceptually original and impressing with the sheer amount of work that must have gone into it.
  • doctorofdarkness’s compelling fanfiction , superbly written, evoking the darkness, lore and politics of Thedas through great characterization and a plot with a sinistre but satisfying ending.

I’ll be contacting the winners by email; let me know if you don’t hear from me soon.

As for everyone else, don’t forget that whilst you may not have won a free copy of the game, release day is fast approaching and you may want to get your pre-orders in! Direct2Drive have a pre-order bonus of a Dalish Ring (increased effectiveness of healing effects, subtract damage from darkspawn attacks, increase combat health regeneration), which is available on both the DDE and the normal edition (also available in the UK).

Thanks to the kind folks over at Direct2Drive, I have 3 copies of Dragon Age: Origins (Digital Deluxe Edition) to give away in a competition!

All you have to do for a chance to win one is post some original Dragon Age-related content to this website. You’ll need to create an account first if you haven’t got one already. You might post a screenshot of your Dragon Age character (as created in the recently released character creator), some fan fiction set in Thedas, a funny captioned screenshot... use your imagination.

Entries must be posted before 12pm GMT on Monday 19th October 2009. They must be suitable for all viewers - think ‘rated PG’. To be eligible to win you must be age 18+ and reside in the US, Canada, UK, or EU.

On Monday 19th I’ll pick my favourite 3 submissions and announce the winners. Winners will be contacted via the email address associated with your dragonagecentral account.

Bioware released their new social site today. Once you’ve logged in with your official forum username and password and created a social account, you’ll be able to download the Character Creator part of the PC game.

This will allow you to try out making characters, which can then be imported into the full-(PC-only)-game on its release in November.

The game has been available for pre-order for some time now, but with the release drawing nearer I’ve now added a page to this website with preorder links for the game. You can also find other Dragon Age-related products for sale there.

Check out the ‘Buy the game!‘ link on the left. If you were planning on buying the game, please support Dragon Age Central by using one of our links.

For the past month or two I haven’t been updating this site very often - sorry about that. Is there anyone out there interested in being an editor? Perhaps you already visit multiple times a day anyway: the main job is just to categorise the dev posts. Beyond that previews and new videos need to be added.

Please email me at sendu@sendu.me.uk if you’d like to help out.

A book set in the Dragon Age universe is to be released March 2009, written by the game’s lead writer David Gaider.

The book is titled ‘Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne‘, and promises George R. R. Martin-esque political machinations as it follows the trials of characters appearing in the game, but 3 decades earlier, before the start of the Dragon Age.

"After his mother, the beloved Rebel Queen, is betrayed and murdered by her own faithless lords, young Maric becomes the leader of a rebel army attempting to free his nation from the control of a foreign tyrant.

His countrymen live in fear; his commanders consider him untested; and his only allies are Loghain, a brash young outlaw who saved his life, and Rowan, the beautiful warrior maiden promised to him since birth. Surrounded by spies and traitors, Maric must find a way to not only survive but achieve his ultimate destiny: Ferelden’s freedom and the return of his line to the stolen throne."

Just a note to acknowledge the recent flakiness of this website over the last few days. There may be a few more problems to come over the coming days as well, but the website should be working most of the time and will soon be back to its usual reliable self.

Thanks for your patience, and apologies for the troubles.

There is now a mobile version of this website at http://mobile.dragonagecentral.com/

It is very minimalist, designed to load quickly on mobile phones. Much functionality is missing, but it should let you check up on the latest goings on in the world of Dragon Age whilst out and about.

Over the E3 period the original official Dragon Age forums were archived and a new set of forums were released at a different url. Up until just now I’ve had all the links to threads in ‘forum post’ posts pointing to the new forum, which meant links to threads made before E3 didn’t work.

This has now been fixed, so you have seamless access to both the old and new official forum from the thread links.

IGN will be showing something about Dragon Age at 9:30am PDT (4:30 GMT) today, as will other gaming websites no doubt.

Update: it has now aired, and is viewable by clicking the ‘watch live’ button (during Wednesday) and seeking to 9:47am. It features the first gameplay footage of Dragon Age, and an interview with Greg Zeschuk.

Update2: gamespot’s variant is available here.

Update3: In about an hour, Bioware will provide a version directly to its fans from here.

Title: FAQ, comments overhaul

I’ve overhauled how the FAQ and comments system work, making them nice and AJAXy. This means, however, that you require a modern browser with javascript turned on to use them.

The comments system is just nicer to use now, whilst the FAQ has been turned into a single page.

Answers to FAQs have always been generated dynamically, but since that takes some time only a few questions could be put on a page at once, hence breaking the FAQ into a page per sub-section to make the page load faster. Now an answer is only retrieved on request, so we have one fast-loading page.

Try playing with the comments system by commenting on this post. It doesn’t matter what you say. You don’t have to be signed up to comment.

I’m very sorry, the site was down for most of Sunday; I was away from any computer and didn’t notice the problem for many hours. Again, my apologies.
