Why cant they just give us a straight game?

Why do they have to add a bitter aftertaste?

What makes you think this is part of the game? You are overreacting.

Perhaps I have misunderstood, it was in Duncan's Codex entry that every grey warden is fated. Also you have the trailer with the Grey warden going to die...

Well, yes, eventually, every Grey Warden will die, and most of them elect to die in the manner elaborated on in the codex entry. It's traditional. But like bashern7 said, everyone dies, not just Grey Wardens. So whether you like it or not, your PC is going to die some day.

How old do you think Duncan is?

And he appears in David's new book as a kid, being recruited into the Grey Wardens. So we're looking at... what, twenty years at least? And he hasn't died yet. So why in the world are you worried about this?

Your character is mortal. They're going to die eventually. Maybe they'll die their sleep, in bed with someone hawt. Maybe they'll choke to death on a pretzel. Maybe they'll eat some bad shellfish and die of a nasty fever. Maybe they'll trip climbing some stairs and snap their neck. They're going to die eventually. That doesn't mean there's a scene in the epilogue where you slip on a banana peel and drown in the punch bowl at your Thanks For Saving Ferelden party.

You guys are really overreacting here.

Life is a suicide mission.

Well, none of us get out of it alive.

Some people have brought up a good point...

What about mixing the ashes of Andraste and consuming it on the spot to help cleanse the Grey Warden of this fatal illness?

Can it be done?

If it makes you happy to imagine that your PC did this, go nuts.

Sheryl I do not mean it in a negative way, I am just considering it with the same survival / self preservation instinct anyone else would when faced with an opportunity to make their state of health better.

On some level people grow attached to the characters they create to pursue a campaign. If you knew of something that will improve the overall well being of your character will you not try it??

And I'm simply saying that if you wish to roleplay it this way, you may. You asked if it could be done. The game doesn't give you that option, because it's impossible to offer the player each and every conceivable choice. But we don't say that you didn't do that.

If you want to imagine that your PC became immortal, sure, why not? If you want to imagine that he not only became immortal, but slipped through a tear in reality and ended up in Mass Effect as Harold Shepard, Specter Extraordinaire, you can do that too.

*shrugs* Dunno. It reeks of something worthwhile beyond 'I visited Andraste's Ash and all I got was some glorified seasoning powder'.

It's glorious on chicken! Redeeming on fish! Try sprinkling Andraste's Ashes in your coffee for a dose of early morning piety! Andraste's Ash -- Tastes like Salvation!

Andraste fought the Darkspawn without becoming a Grey Warden. Why can't the PC be as effective?

Andraste didn't fight darkspawn. She fought the Tevinter Imperium.

First there is a trailer where the party confront a mage who has become an abomination. That abomination can only be defeated while THE CANTICLE OF LIGHT IS BEING CHANTED. This is concrete proof of the divine power of that chant and indirectly the power of whoever inspired it.
That's not the Canticle of Light. It's the Litany of Adrala. Adrala was a mage. It's a spell.

Quote:  Second of course is the curative power of Andraste's Ashes. I challenge the devs to say this ain't so.

How do you know they're Andraste's ashes? That's what people think they are, but maybe it's a pot full of the ashes of dead mages. Maybe they're ashes of enchanted mage staffs that have been burned. You can't exactly verify what they are or where they came from.

Hmmm...there's no indication that this is definitely the way your character dies, nor that this happens anytime near the end of the game. Your character may be run over by a pack of enraged nugs five years after the game, or he may spend the next 20 years ruling Ferelden with an iron fist before going insane and being killed by a once loyal Teyrn or he may retire with a loved one and have hordes of grandchildren before quietly disappearing one day. There's nothing in this information that dictates your decisions in the extreme matter you seem to be presupposing.
Indeed.

The Calling comes at the end of a Grey Warden's life, a life made that much shorter by his duty -- but I'd be careful about leaping to the conclusion that the game must end with the Calling. How you feel about a Grey Warden's overall situation is up to you, but you do NOT know how the game ends or what happens to your character in DAO -- and that's really all there is to it. Nor will we tell anyone how the game ends, no matter how much they run around in circles waving their hands and screaming that they need reassurances lest the sky come falling down. wink smile
